Colour Class #23 — The art of rest

For the final chapter in our Colour Class series, we return once more to the beautiful Copenhagen home of Céline Hallas, founder of Color Connaisseur. In a listed apartment just steps from the city's historic Nyhavn harbour, Céline and her family created a sitting room dedicated to quiet – a cosy refuge for rituals, conversations, and stolen moments of solitude.

As we wrap up this colourful journey, this room feels like the perfect conclusion: a space that balances boldness with calm, personal expression with visual harmony. It's a reminder that colour isn't just something we decorate with – it's something we live with.

Location: For the final instalment of Colour Class, we return to the heart of Copenhagen, to the beautifully preserved listed apartment of Céline Hallas – founder of Color Connaisseur – where she lives with her family, just a stone’s throw from the vibrant waterfront of Nyhavn.

Mission: The aim was to create a dedicated sitting room – a calm, cocoon-like counterpart to the large open-plan living and dining area the family has cherished for years. While the communal space encourages togetherness, this room was envisioned as a sanctuary: a place for films, deep conversation, or simply to close the door and enjoy a quiet moment alone. Every morning, it also becomes a personal ritual space for music, incense, and reflection – grounding the day with calm intention.

Colours: The wallpaper takes centre stage – a design inspired by the embroidered textiles of the Ainu people of northern Japan, once believed to offer protection and healing. Its intricate patterns add rhythm, soul, and depth to the room. To support its presence, the tall panelling and woodwork were painted in soft whites, carefully tuned to minimise contrast and allow the wallpaper to shine.

Two high-gloss built-in cupboards in warm brown add visual weight and grounding, while the denim-blue sofa brings both calm and richness to the palette.

A Montana SPIN in deep green, topped with glass, provides a solid yet airy anchor - making the record player a quiet focal point. Through the room is layered with objects and detailm the palette flows in gentle gradation from whites and browns to blues and greens - creating a sense of harmony and ease. Some spaces find tranquiluty in simplicity, others in richness. This room shows that serenity can be achieved not by substraction, but through balance - where bold elements coexist in quiet harmony, and a strong pattern can hold the heart of a calm interior.

Colour isn't just something we decorate with – it's something we live with.
