Colour Class #22 — A study in stillness and storytelling

For the 22nd edition of Colour Class, we visit the Nyhavn apartment of Céline Hallas, founder of Color Connaisseur. Nestled in a beautifully preserved listed building at the heart of Copenhagen, the home she shares with her family looks out onto timber-framed courtyards and the city’s vibrant harbourfront.
The goal was to design a serene bedroom centred around a soft green Montana island unit – practical yet elegant – providing space for everyday essentials. Framed by thoughtful personal touches, the room blends function and feeling: Polaroid snapshots of the children, tiny keepsakes from trips to Japan, an embroidered artwork by Loji Höskuldsson, and a magazine holder full of bedtime inspiration.
This Colour Class is a reminder that the elements you can’t change – the view, the architecture, the bones of the space – are sometimes the ones that give a room its soul. By embracing these constants, you can create a bedroom that feels deeply personal, beautifully grounded, and effortlessly calm.
A cushion here, a mirror there, subtle accents that breathe life into the calm. The result is a room that feels effortlessly understated, yet full of warmth and personality.
Location: Nestled in a beautifully preserved listed apartment just steps from the vibrant bustle of Copenhagen’s Nyhavn district, the home of Céline Hallas – founder of Color Connaisseur – offers a serene retreat for her and her family, right at the intersection of historic charm and city life.
Mission: The ambition for this bedroom was to design a serene and thoughtfully composed space, anchored by a soft green Montana dresser island – both practical and elegant – serving as the heart of the room and housing everyday essentials such as clothes, handbags, and make-up.
Colours: A palette of gentle neutrals flows across the room, creating a soft and harmonious backdrop. This tranquil base is beautifully offset by the exposed timber beams, whose warm tones bring a sense of depth, comfort, and quiet history to the space. Just beyond the windows, the burnt orange façades of the 18th-century courtyard glow with character – their vivid hue softly mirrored inside through carefully chosen details: a cushion here, a mirror there, subtle accents that breathe life into the calm. The result is a room that feels effortlessly understated, yet full of warmth and personality.
The lesson this time is that sometimes, the features you can’t change – like a view onto a quiet courtyard or the presence of exposed timber framing – are what lend a space its unique charm. By embracing these fixed elements and allowing them to inform the design, what first seems like a constraint can become the very foundation of balance and beauty.
