Colour Class #21 — A backdrop for calm, a stage for fashion

In the 21st edition of Colour Class, we return to the Amager home of fashion designer Mathilde Prins, her husband Mikkel, and their two young sons.

The task was to create a bedroom that feels serene while still reflecting Mathilde’s playful love of colour and fashion, balancing a large, unified wardrobe wall with open display space for her vibrant collection of clothes and accessories.

Join us as we explore how one soft, enveloping hue can bring calm to an entire room, while Montana’s multicoloured storage units turn everyday essentials into a joyful exhibition. This project shows how bedrooms can be both sanctuary and stage, where rest and play live side by side.

By painting everything in one calming shade you create the quiet foundation.

Location: In the old part of Amager, we find this beautiful, classic apartment with stunning natural light, built using the finest materials. This is the home of fashion designer Mathilde Prins, better known as @myrainbowfeeling, her husband Mikkel, and their two young sons.

Mission: The task this time was to create a bedroom that feels calm yet still reflects the family’s playful love of colour. With Mathilde’s wardrobe full of bold patterns and vibrant pieces, the challenge was to design a space that could both store discreetly and showcase proudly – balancing minimalism with personality.

Colours: The solution was to cover the entire room, including the large wardrobe, in the Color Connaisseur shade Orange Ice Cream. By letting this carefully chosen tone flow seamlessly across all surfaces, the bedroom immediately gained a sense of harmony and calm. This monochrome backdrop sets the stage for Montana to shine.

The multicoloured Montana storage unit takes on the role it was designed for – to showcase rather than to hide. Here, Mathilde’s favourite clothes, shoes, and accessories are not tucked away but displayed as part of the décor. Montana proves how storage can be both functional and joyful, turning everyday essentials into a living part of the room.

Adding to the character of the space, Marimekko’s iconic Unikko print repeats across cushions and curtains, weaving playfulness into the calm setting without breaking its balance. The result is a bedroom that is both restful and full of life – a serene retreat that celebrates colour, design and the joy of surrounding yourself with pieces you love.

The lesson this time is that you don’t need to choose between “over the top” and minimalism. By painting everything in one calming shade you create the quiet foundation. That very calmness allows Montana’s colourful elements, bold patterns and favourite pieces to step into the spotlight, ensuring the room has space for both rest and play.
