Colour Class #20 — Colours as bold minimalism

In the 20th edition of Colour Class, we visit a charming apartment near the lively Nyhavn district in Copenhagen, home to Céline Hallas, founder of Color Connaisseur, and her family.

The mission was clear – create a teenage bedroom that’s boldly pink yet minimalist. The goal: visual balance around a large, practical wardrobe.

Join us as we explore how a soft, warm pink can envelop a space, making it vibrant yet serene. Discover how details like a custom wardrobe with fabric-backed glass doors and a floral headboard provide elegant contrast within a bold monochromatic theme. This project shows minimalism in a maximalist form, challenging traditional notions of style and colour.

Although pink is not traditionally associated with minimalist style, this room clearly shows how minimalism can also be practiced in a maximalist way.

Location: The home of Céline Hallas, founder of Color Connaisseur, and her family, is situated in a beautifully preserved listed apartment right next to the vibrant and bustling Nyhavn district in Copenhagen.

Mission: To create a teenage bedroom that is uncompromisingly pink, yet still minimalist. The goal was to achieve visual balance and calm around a large, practical wardrobe that can hold everything a teenage needs - and then some.

Colours: In the apartment's sunniest room, where historical details beautifully meet the everyday demands of teenage life, a complete makeover was carried out. This was the final update to her room before she moves out. Her wishes were clear: plenty of pink, minimal furnishings, a large mirror, and no wall decorations.

Therefore, both the walls and woodwork were painted in the same intense yet soft pink hue with a warm undertone, giving the room a harmonious and pleasant atmosphere instead of a sharp, overpowering color experience. The ceiling was kept white to ensure an airy and light feel in the space.

To fulfill the desire for minimalism, a large, custom-built wardrobe was installed. The wardrobe is designed to harmonize with the building's original style and was painted in a deep, dark brown high-gloss finish. Due to its size, the wardrobe could easily dominate the room, so to create visual lightness, doors with glass panels were chosen, backed with natural-colored cotton fabric. The fabric elegantly hides the wardrobe's contents while adding a soft, warm detail to the room.

The only element that breaks from the pink universe, besides the wardrobe, is the bed's headboard, which is upholstered in a fabric with large flowers. This textile element creates a distinct contrast and acts as the room's natural focal point. The rest of the furnishings - from the large mirror, drawers for makeup and small items, bedding, TV stand, down to the extension cord - all faithfully follow the pink theme. Together, this creates a surprisingly calm atmosphere despite the bold color.
