Colour Class #18 — Serenity and maximalism in a cozy bedroom

For the 18th chapter of our Colour Class series, we head to a quaint corner of a historic home, where a small office and storage room have been merged into a cosy adult bedroom.

The goal was to create a space that balances serenity and maximalism within its compact footprint. Warm mid-brown tones envelop the walls and woodwork, providing a grounding base, while a soft blue ceiling introduces freshness and contrast.

Carefully chosen elements, like pastel curtains and a pink Montana chest, add character and playfulness. Discover how we harmonised bold colours and thoughtful details to craft a restful yet vibrant retreat.

This bedroom proves a restful retreat doesn’t need to be white or beige to inspire reflection and peace.

Location: In Frederiksberg, there are streets where no two villas are alike, and each house exudes history and fantastic craftsmanship. On one such street stands today's house, built in 1898. Here resides Cathrine with her husband Anders and their two young daughters.

Mission: After merging a small office with an adjoining storage room, it’s time to transform the space into a cosy, inviting adult bedroom. Though compact, the aim is to create a room that feels both serene and maximalist.

Colours: Nestled in a corner of this beautiful old house, where the past lingers despite renovations, the bedroom strikes a balance between comfort and playful elegance. Previously a small room with an even smaller storage area, it now accommodates a bed, a chest of drawers, and a changing table – a haven of calm and security.

To instil warmth and intimacy, the walls and woodwork were painted a mid-brown tone. This hue creates an enveloping, welcoming atmosphere while serving as a stable base for contrasts and details.

Carefully chosen elements add character to what might otherwise feel impersonal. Pastel curtains bring lightness, while a soft pink Montana chest of drawers acts as a statement piece by the large window. The iconic Ultrafragola mirror, positioned centrally, reflects light and adds depth and vibrancy.

To offset the warm brown, the ceiling was painted a soft blue. This gentle hue introduces a sense of freshness and contrast, giving the room an airy, whimsical quality – like a sky above the snug retreat.

The interplay of colours creates a harmonious balance. The brown anchors the space, while feminine touches and the blue ceiling add playfulness and lightness. This bedroom proves a restful retreat doesn’t need to be white or beige to inspire reflection and peace.
