Marking the 100th anniversary of Verner Panton
Verner Panton is considered one of Denmark's most influential 20th-century furniture and interior designers, not to mention one of the most avant-garde. During his career, he created innovative and futuristic designs in a variety of materials and in vibrant, exotic colours.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the legendary Danish architect and designer Verner Panton.
A shared world of ideas and colours
When Peter J. Lassen, the founder of Montana, first met the young Danish architect Verner Panton in 1956, neither of them was aware that this would be the beginning of a close friendship and life-long collaboration.
Between them arose a constant dialogue about design in which their shared world of ideas was surrounded by great mutual respect. The result was a large number of interesting and innovative pieces of furniture designed by Verner Panton. They were brought to life through a passion for design with form, creativity and functionality as the driving forces, not to mention an approach to colours, whitch was unique at the time; Panton use of colours has been a great source of inspiration for the foundation of Montana's colour universe.
The first chair by Verner Panton
Designed in 1955, Verner Panton’s very first chair, Panton One, is available in handwoven paper string in the colours Black and Nature, as well as in eight cord colours: Duke, Holmes, Clark, Vincent, Carmen, Marylinn, Marcel, and Scarlett.
Panton Wire – a timeless system
Panton Wire is raw yet elegant, light yet industrial in its design. The Panton Wire shelves can be used individually or in combination – on the floor, hanging on the wall or as room dividers.
Panton Wire is available in two depths, in chrome or lacquered in the colours Snow, Black, Monarch, Pine, Black Red and Rosehip. Over the years, several accessories have been added such as glass shelves and top panels.
Celebration of Verner Panton’s design legacy
To honour his centenary, 2026 will be dedicated to celebrating Verner Panton’s design legacy – through the relaunch of a timeless classic from 1973 and a closer exploration of the colour universe that defined his work. Stay tuned.
The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting.
A landscape of seating
In 1971, Verner Panton designed the modular wire Pantonova seating system for the now-legendary Danish restaurant, Varna: the epitome of the 70s vibe, with its lavish, experimental shapes and vibrant colours.
Verner Panton was an avid creator and innovator of modular, iconic furniture that merged with its spatial context, transcending the category of furniture. As such, Pantonova and Montana are a perfect fit.
Pantonova – a modular wire seating system
The strong bond and shared history between Verner Panton and Peter J. Lassen has made it a natural choice for Montana to manufacture several of Verner Panton's designs - including the Pantonova modular wire seating from 1971.
The Pantonova offers endless applications in contemporary contexts, from lobbies, receptions, lounge areas and retail spaces - to the private living rooms of design aficionados.
Case – Cirkusbygningen
Cirkusbygningen is a protected Copenhagen landmark with a legacy of extraordinary experiences dating back to 1886. Within its historic interior, Verner Panton’s Pantonova seating system creates sculptural lounge areas that echo his original use of colour and dialogue with the lighting design.
